This is my race report, Susan Crowe (Female winner of the Spiny Cray Ultra 2011)

Well, it was another fantastic race in the wilderness of Julatten. It was great to get there the night before to enjoy the quiet, have a good meal at the local pub and join the birdwatchers staying at the local accommodation – therapy on a new level for me!! Once again, the White boys had everything totally organised from the electronic wrist straps to the home-baked goodies (thanks Kylie) at the 28klm turnaround.

The track has beautiful scenery, is mostly in shade and has plenty of challenging hills to test your hamstrings and everything else attached to them. Being able to do a run like that with the luxury of drop bags, kilometre markers the whole way and a free beer at the end is amazing and it would be great to see more people take on the challenge – you just don’t know what you are missing out on!

Unfortunately, I was a bit of a chatterbox and spent 7 minutes at the 28klm turnaround so missed my record from last year….2 minutes is probably plenty of time but after doing a similar thing at Porcupine Gorge (and narrowly missing the race record there) I may have finally learnt to get on with the task at hand and chat later!! I guess I will have to test that new theory next year as it is a race that will keep me coming back and hopefully encourage some others to take on those extra kilometres.
