2010 Race commences at 8:00am and 8:30am July 18th

Cairns only Adventure Sport organisers, Adventure HQ continue a proven format of Multisport racing in Far North Queensland aimed at having fun in the outdoors. This year individuals as well as teams are invited to enter – see below for more details.

The James Grant Memorial Race will be staged in the beautiful Goldsborough (Mulgrave River) Valley with a multisport format familiar to most. There are two events to choose from, both events can be raced as a team of 2 or as an individual.

  • Social – 4 hour multisport
  • Sport – 6 hour multisport

Social – commences July 18th at 8:30am

This event has been designed for those who are moderately fit and are tapering for the Pyramid Race. The aim is to experience adventure racing in a format that is fun in the outdoors. It involves hiking/running, canoeing on a glorious river and mountain biking. Leaders are expected to finish in 2 ½ hours with most finished in 4.5 hours.

Sport – commences July 18th at 8:00am sharp

This event has been designed for the fitter athlete with some racing background. The aim is to create a challenge for the leaders but make it an adventure in the outdoors that is achievable by all competitors. With a hike/run then canoeing leg then a mountain bike ride leaders are expected to finish in about 4 ½ hours with most competitors in under 6 hours. Limited navigation skills are needed for this race.

Format

Unsupported event – support crews are not necessary but are welcome
Multisport format – similar to Redlynch Valley Estate Multisport Race.

Detail:

  • Teams of 2 [Preferred], or individuals.
  • Teams can be all Male, all Female or Mixed. We will recognise and reward winners in these categories.
  • All entry payments [only available via online website] must be made by PayPal before acceptance of entry
  • Heaps of random draws for competitors and volunteers.
  • Minimum age 13 years with written parental approval. Parent must sign Waiver on Race Day
  • Hike, Paddle & Mountain Bike legs.
  • 15K, 10K & 32K for 6 hour course.
  • 6k, 10k & 13k for 4 hour course.
  • You supply MTB and also supply your own two person Canoe or can hire a craft from a number of hire shops in the region. Contact Tim via email for info on hire canoes – timandmf [at] hotmail [dot] com

General Info

We will be able to camp at Kearney’s Flat on Saturday night. Campers will need to pay an additional $5.00 per person for overnight camping Saturday night. If not camping, make sure you allow plenty of time to arrive at Kearney’s Flat by 7:30 am at the latest for a 7:45 am race briefing.

  • Allow 105 minutes to drive from Cairns CBD to Kearney’s Flats [Race HQ] including canoe / bike drop off
  • We will have some canoes for hire. You will need to pick them up and transport them yourselves.
  • Once you have entered, this information will be forwarded to you.

6 hour

The 6 hour race people will need to drive into Roos Road Bridge. The turnoff to here is opposite the Mountain View Hotel. Here you will drop your bike (security in place). Then you will drop your canoe at the private house below Arnold’s Bridge. You run down to your canoe below Arnold’s Bridge. Paddle to Roos Road where you trade canoe for bike.. When you arrive here in the race you will swap canoe for bike. 6 hour people will drop canoes at the sign posted private house just before Arnold’s Bridge. You will run from Kearney’s Flat to here to get in your boat.

The run will go 4.5 km upstream from Kearney’s Flat to a turnaround then back through the campground and down to below Arnold’s Bridge.

The ride returns to the start at Kearney’s Flats then on to the Causeway and back.
15km hike, 10km canoe, 32km bike.

Paddle the river at least once before the race.

4 hour

You will start at 8:30 am. On Sunday Morning you will need to drive into Roos Road Bridge. The turnoff to here is opposite the Mountain View Hotel. Here you will drop your bike (security in place). You will drop your canoe at the private house below Arnold’s Bridge. You run down to your canoe below Arnold’s Bridge. Paddle to Roos Road where you trade canoe for bike.

The ride takes you through two cane farms and back onto the Goldsborough Road and back to Kearney’s Flat.
6km hike, 10km canoe, 13km bike.

Paddle the river at least once before the race.

Things to Note

  • Entries paid by 5pm on July 9th will attract the early bird fee. Add $15 or $10 [Student]to entries made or paid for after this date.
  • A compulsory race briefing will be held at 7.45 am Sunday Morning. Allow 2 hours from Cairns to unload gear etc.
  • No entries after 5pm Thursday 15th July. Adventure HQ inc reserves the right to accept or refuse any entry.
  • Competitors must be present at the presentation to be eligible to win a random draw prize
  • Entry age is 13 years or older [short race only].
  • Support crews are not necessary but welcome.
  • We will refund full entry fee less $10 if an individual is forced to withdraw from the event prior to 17th July .
  • No refunds after 17th July without a medical certificate. If this is the case we will credit you entry fee for next year’s race.

  1. Looking forward (I think) to my first James Grant…I’ve heard so much about the event and hope the training I’ve been doing will sustain me through what will be the biggest physical challenge I have attempted. We’ll see if there’s still some life in the old dog.
