Description

Urban navigation participants , in teams of 2 to 5 are given a street map with the street names removed and a clue sheet. Numbered checkpoints are marked on the map and the clue sheet provides description of the feature/object on which they will find a coloured dot. Once located, participants mark off the relevant colour against the clue on the clue sheet. Within the hour they return to HQ and hand in the clue sheet and the team with the highest score wins. The race time is the maximum time participants are allowed on the course before points are deducted as a late penalty. No compass navigation required. Cold fluids will be available at event conclusion. Random Draws will be drawn at evening BBQ – Participants will need to be present to be eligible for Random Draws.

Who’s it for

Families, couples, kids in prams, dogs on leads, young, old, fast, slow . . . anyone!

What to bring

  • Comfortable walking/running shoes
  • Hat, sunnies, sunscreen
  • Water bottle
  • Pen or pencil to mark off the cluesheet

What’ll it Cost?

Team details can be notified on the online entry form.

Description

Bush navigation participants [in teams of 2 to 5] are given a topographic map and a clue sheet. Numbered checkpoints are marked on the map and the clue sheet provides a description of the feature/object at which they will find a unique punch which they use to punch their scorecard. The scorecard is handed in at the conclusion of the event to determine scores and placings. The aim is to accumulate as high a score as possible in the allotted time (or less). Points are deducted if you return late. Compass navigation is required but help is at hand. Experienced rogainers will be available to accompany teams and assist you in learning the basics of compass navigation. Random Draws will be drawn at evening BBQ – Participants will need to be present to be eligible for Random Draws.

Who’s it for

Families, couples, kids in prams/carry packs (yes really we have a number of members who continue to enjoy rogaining with their infants and toddlers in tow), young, old, fast, slow . . . anyone!

What to bring

  • Sturdy walking/running shoes
  • Hat, sunnies, sunscreen
  • Water bottle/hydration pack
  • Pen or pencil
  • Torch/headlamp – in case you’re late
  • Compass if you have one. Again our experienced rogainers will be on hand with their own should it be required

What’ll it Cost?

$5 pp [children under 13 free] if pre-registered here or add $5 per person if registered on the day.

Team details can be notified on the online entry form.

Lenny and Gwyn (our hosts at Barrabadeen) will provide a BBQ dinner at the conclusion of the event at a cost of $8.00 (inc soft drink).

BYO chairs, plates and cutlery. Water and cordial will also be available, BYO other beverages.

Description

These events are designed to allow anyone who undertakes some regular exercise to try out a slightly different format of event than has commonly been seen in the North Queensland region. We are fortunate to see many individual running, triathlon or mountain bike events on the calendar throughout the year, however the opportunity to do these as an off road style of event is less common. If you have a bit of sporting experience then the Tinaroo Terra Off-Road Tri or Multisport Race should be right for you, and if you are new to the outdoor sports, or unsure of your abilities then the Come and Try format should allow you to complete the event and gain some confidence. Please contact the organisers for guidance on anything that is unclear.

The following document describes the events, course directions, minimum mandatory gear requirements. Course description is subject to finalisation, and may change as approvals; landholder and government agency requirements are resolved so specific details of any alterations to course, or instructions will be advised in the briefing immediately before the event.

Please note the equipment that is listed as “required” are the minimum requirement to meet the applicable safety measures for each of the stages.

If you are unfamiliar with the Tinaroo township area, the descriptions and detail below are best interpreted by looking at images via http://maps.google.com.au for best viewing results.

Off-Road Triathlon

Triathlon is also considered a multi-sport race as it comprises the three disciplines of swim, run and ride. The run is usually on a trail through the bush rather than on a marked road and the ride is completed on a mountain bike rather than a road bike or triathlon specific bike and again the course is generally on trails through the bush rather than on a marked road.

Note: Drafting rules do not apply however please maintain a safe travelling distance and be aware of your safety and that of your fellow competitors when traversing the off-road bike course.

Multisport Race

A multi-sport race is essentially any race that has more than one discipline to it, but generally refers to an event that includes trail running/hiking, mountain biking, and canoeing/kayaking but may also include abseiling, rock climbing or other forms of traversing various geographical features. Compass navigation is generally not required as courses are linear in nature and well signposted by the course designer.

Note: No specification as to the water craft used (other than it cannot be motorized or sail) and there will be no allowances/penalties based on class of craft. Two person craft are permitted however remainder of race will be classed as “solo” (no teams or relays) but by all means get together with a friend and have a great day out. Canadian Canoes are available for hire ($15 per canoe) through Tim Trehearn (ph: 0428105570)

Come n Try Off Road Triathlon or Multisport Race

We are also offering a shorter version of each of the above which is aimed at encouraging those who wish to try out this style of outdoor sport and achieve a small step to a future larger event. The Come n Try mountain bike stage will be along a pretty flat gravel road, and finish with a flat run along the waterfront parklands.

Age Restrictions

In accordance with safe sport practices and Triathlon Australia regulations the following minimum ages apply:

  • Come n Try Multisport Race – 14 with previous experience or 16
  • Come n Try Off-Road Triathlon – 14 with previous experience or 16
  • Tinaroo Terra Multisport Race – 16 with previous experience or 18
  • Tinaroo Terra Off-Road Triathlon – 16 with previous experience or 18

What to bring?

  • Running shoes
  • Hat, sunnies, sunscreen
  • Hydration pack/water bottles (water will be available at transition points)
  • Mechanically sound mountain bike with tyres suitable for off-road conditions (including basic repair kit)
  • Australian Standard approved bike helmet
  • Class 1 or 2 PFD (Personal Floatation Device) (Multisport Racers only)

Cold water, cordial and fruit will be available to competitors at the conclusion of their race.

As mentioned in the Multisport Race section above, Canadian Canoes are available for hire ($15 per canoe) through Tim Trehearn (ph: 0428105570).

Presentations

A brief presentation will be made to participants at the conclusion of the Multisport/Triathlon events (approximately 11.30 am) in the transition area.

Tips and Tricks

In no particular order

  • Familiarise yourself with the general direction that the different parts of your chosen course will be heading.
  • Arrive early and set out your gear at transition near your bike, mindful of your neighbours’ gear. Please bunch up as much as possible. Any excess gear/bags, leave in your car or move to side of transition area.
  • Participants should be able to comfortably complete the course in a pair of bike niks, jersey or single/sports top, and a pair of running shoes. Consider Sportsslick, Amoline, 3B, Vasaline or similar if chaff and rubbing could be a source of discomfort.
  • When riding look 5-10m ahead for obstacles, but remain aware of the bigger picture and remember the quicker you go, the further to look ahead. Be aware of who is beside you or behind so that you can alter course quickly of required. Similar thinking to this can be applied to any of the off road running as well.
  • Consider you nutrition needs, dependant on the conditions of the day and length of course you are attempting, at a minimum plenty of water and some electrolyte drink on a regular basis during the event.

We believe this will be the first Expo of its kind in Far North Queensland and provides a fantastic opportunity to pick new skills, meet local outdoor club members and maybe even sign up for a new challenge in 2010.

In keeping with the come n try theme of the weekend many local clubs will be conducting demonstrations, workshops and activities that you can participate in, while cheering on the athletes in the off-road triathlon/multisport race.
